What do you do if you want an autism assessment?

If you are 11 and 17 years old and want an autism assessment, you (or your parent or carer) need to speak to your GP or another professional.  This could be a school nurse, social worker or other health professionals like a speech and language therapist (SLT).

A referral can be made if you, and the professional you speak to, agree an autism assessment is needed.

Further information and referral forms can be found at Suffolk Infolink | Improvements to East and West Suffolk Neurodevelopmental Pathway

When we receive your referral forms

  • the information is looked at carefully by our team

  • we might ask for more information

If we think there is another reason that would better explain your differences, that is not autism. We may then refer you to another service for support. We will let you know what we have decided.

If an autism assessment is needed:

your name will be placed on our waiting list.

  • we ask for your / your parent or carers consent for the assessment. Click here for more information about consent

  • we ask people who know you well for information for example your school or college. We ask for this information before we offer you an appointment.

When we are able to meet you, we will send you an appointment letter. This will say:

  • who your appointment is with

  • the date and time of the appointment

  • if the appointment will be on the telephone, a video call or if it is a face to face

We have clinics, for face-to-face appointments, Stowmarket, and Ipswich. We try to see you as close to home as possible. Click here for more information.
